Around 70% of Fiji’s landscape is steep or very steep.
Agricultural land is estimated to be about 4,276 km2 of the total land area of 18,333 km² (i.e., about 23%). Arable land (suitable for cropping) is estimated to be about 2000 km2 ( 200,000 hectares) which is about 11% total land area. Previous assessments suggest that arable land use experienced a minima in 1968 when 67,000 ha was being utilised and peaked in 1997 when about 180,000 ha was being utilised. These figures suggest utilisation of total arable land has ranged between 33% and 90%.
